Kosova
During the summer, a team of Fellsiders will be travelling to Kosova, to spend a fortnight with the charity, Smile International helping with humanitarian aid work in the aftermath of war. All but one of the team have never done anything like this before, but they are excited at the prospect of being able to help directly, and gain first hand experiences of a world only seen on the news. Asked what made them want to take this trip, one team member explained: ‘There are areas all over the world where there is great need. We see these on our TV screens and once the crisis is over they lose their ‘newsworthiness’ and are forgotten. Kosova is one of these places. We have so much in this country that we just want to go and help make a difference, and even in just two weeks we can help with the ongoing work of Smile International.’ A second member agreed: ‘We are so fortunate in this country and yet there is still so much deprivation in places like Kosova through the effects of war. Even though a fortnight is a very short time, we wanted to support the established work that Smile International is doing.’
The team members are meeting the costs of the trip themselves, with a little help from a special church mission fund, but they wanted to take a substantial sum of money with them as a gift for the ongoing work of Smile International in the area of Kosova where they will be working. To date, over £3,000 has been raised with coffee mornings, and the Grand Auction.
